Last week, we (@danthallner and @anniquevd ) went on fieldwork to Canada to sample Devonian rocks for magnetostratigraphy. We flew out with a helicopter and camped in the wilderness for about a week. It was an amazing adventure!

The exhibition has ended and we are all on our way

The exhibition has ended and we are all on our way home after an amazing week. One last (but not least) member of our crew that we want to introduce is Jenny! She is a PhD student in volcanology in Liverpool and got herself completely up to speed on palaeomagnetism just so she could help us this week! She did amazing and we are so grateful :-). This gorgeous German is usually climbing the rocks so if she is too high up to see you will recognise her amazing laugh and feel instantly comforted. Thanks Jenny and have fun in Montreal for your conference!

Meet our youngest PhD student, Ben Handford. He joined our lab last autumn and has already been on fieldwork to Italy and to Argentina! So lucky. He has been an awesome help this whole week and is also a great laugh. This stylish Northerner is not the most talkative but what he does say is spot on and often hilarious. This is Joe, a PhD student at Imperial College in London. He uses magnetic minerals to track hydrocarbon migration pathways. All week he has been part of our team and sharing his knowledge. Since he lives in London he was also our go to for any activities outside of the exhibition. The best restaurants the best parks to take breaks in etc. “When not busy with science I play an awful game of football and enjoy watching people who have some more ability”. We are sure that is exaggerated Joe!

This is Georgia. She has just finished her undergrad geophysics degree and did her final thesis in our lab. As Annique’s student she studied sedimentary rocks to find out more about the magnetic field from the Devonian. She is here during her holidays to excite other people about palaeomagnetism. Outside of academia she is one to be feared with her exquisite fencing skills. Welcome back to another day at magnetic to the core. Today we are introducing Domenico. This Italian modeller is a postdoc in our lab. He has traveled quite a bit for his passion, coming from Italy and doing his PhD in Germany. His last postdoc was in Toulouse and we are very lucky with him having moved to Liverpool to help us with our quest to link the Earth’s magnetic field to deep Earth behaviour. His numerical models of the Geodynamo are getting better and better! Meet Louise! Extremely soon to be dr. Hawkins has finished her PhD and is about to graduate. She is standing so close to these extremely old books only to find out they are not nearly as old as the rocks she studies. She spent the last few months bringing her paleointensity knowledge to Perth and will come back to Liverpool for a postdoc in August. This hard working American is creating his own statistical field model for Earth and is always helping others with their modelling questions. Meet dr. Greig Paterson. This happy Scot is a NERC fellow at our Geomagnetism lab @livuni. He works on almost all aspects of palaeomagnetism and is able to get the whole lab to work for him when he wants to. Before Liverpool he worked in Beijing, where he met his lovely wife. Greig was of immense value in the organisation of this event and will be around all week to share his enthusiasm and answer questions.

This is Annique, or Dr. van der Boon for those in the know. She is the first of many people that we will introduce in the next week and a half. Annique is the mastermind of the entire operation (our stand at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition) and has led us with her endless enthusiasm and leadership talent. She is an amazing field geologist and is showing us her next fieldwork location for this summer in Canada. They will have to go by helicopter because it is so remote.
